Minervini built the set in Montana, then let the cast live for two months
Synopsis
In the winter of 1862, during the Civil War, the United States Army sends a company of volunteers to patrol uncharted territories in the West. Actors delivered dialogues and thoughts while living in the desert, imagining themselves as Civil War soldiers.
Roberto Minervini is known for his dramatic yet documentary approach to rural American life
Filled with beautiful camera work and a meditative exploration of the Civil War era and its characters, Minervini offers an interesting new perspective on the environment and the aimless and terrifying journey of soldiers observing the battles of the war. Strong sound design, naturalistic performances and camera work help set the tone, atmosphere and setting.
Although some dialogues sometimes end up with inconsistent sentiments that destroy aspects of realism
Including the good direction used throughout and some of the fight sequences are well directed and presented. Overall, it’s a nice and mediocre take on Civil War that I found interesting.
I guess I’m a little pretentious
I know a lot of people don’t like it, but I really like it.
